Music & PR Pt 1: Me, Myself and I

music1

It’s 2010, and I would like to introduce a new category to PR Prescriptions. Anyone who has ever worked with me will tell you that I am at my best when I’m digging into strategy with great music blasting from my headphones.

In an effort to blend two things I love on a more consistent basis (and share them with you), I have decided to officially launch: “Music & PR.”

Part 1 was inspired by the opening session of Social Justice Camp DC. The organizers shared a loose definition of an “unconference” with the newbies and then asked everyone to share their name, what they did and three words that conveyed why they were in attendance. One lady’s response stuck with me. Unfortunately, I can’t remember any of the things listed above, but I can remember what she said at the end…

After wrapping up her intro, she said, “I work at [organization x], but I’m here as an individual.”

Insert record scratch….wait for it….here!

Let’s go back quickly. She works at [organization x], but she’s here as an individual.

The first part is just fine, but it’s the second part that is a little problematic for me.

How can you mention a company’s name in an intro and then say you’re attending as an individual?

Are you still an individual if the business cards you’re sharing display the company name and logo?

Many more questions to ask and ways to answer, but this person’s quest to be seen as an individual got me thinking about De La Soul, so I’ll leave you with this: Me, Myself and I.

6 Ways to Play Twitter

This little gem came my way via Hard Knox Life, but all credit must go to Aki Spicer at Fallon Planning. Too great not to share. Looking at these categories immediately makes me think of Dan Schawbel though. We all have a personal brand that we build, and a large part of that involves our communication with others. Looking at the image below, I think I fit into several categories. How about you?

Personal Branding: A Few Ways to Make the Stars Align

Coming out of PodcampDC, I think that the most creative AND useful presentation award goes to Jennifer Berk with her presentation on Content Cross-Promotion. Right in the middle of her presentation, I had the “that’s it!” moment. It’s a little different for everyone. For some, it’s the basic light bulb going off; for me, it’s the ringing bell and music cue when someone wins on the Price is Right! (Minor Disclosure: I love that show and intend to one day play Plinko!)

Ok, so my “that’s it!” moment happened when Jennifer shared her categories of Link Structures with an astronomical theme. They included:

- Nebula: Lots of pieces, not linked together

- Asteroids: Related items but not fully linked

- Solar System: All sites linked to one central place

- Black Hole: Bits of everything featured in one location (blogs, podcast, video, etc.)

- Constellation: Specific links available guiding you along a path

I hope that by now you too are having a “that’s it” moment. I think many of us go about interacting online and creating identities without giving any real thought to how we can strategically link/cross-promote our online content. Out of the five systems mentioned, I think I’m most partial to the Solar System and the Black Hole. Both provide the opportunity for the site visitor to get a snapshot of you and all that you do online.

In everything we do, we should all be thinking about how we can make the stars align.
