Re: Volkswagen 2013 Superbowl Ad

Volkswagen Logo

Many of us have seen the ad by now and heard the controversy. I’ve been chewing on this for a few days and have come to a conclusion.

To me (someone not Jamaican but of West Indian heritage and parentage), the Volkswagen Superbowl ad is not racist. I like it because of what it attempts to accomplish and find it rather interesting for a few reasons:

  1. It presents the unexpected. “Just who is this white man with a Jamaican accent?”
  2. It presents the unexpected within the familiar – the office place.
  3. It highlights a group that is not often mentioned outside of sports, music and a few taboo topics.

THAT SAID, I did have one issue with the commercial. Several stories note that the VW team surveyed the ad among 100 Jamaicans and that a speech coach was hired to help the actors be as accurate as possible with the accents.

Here’s my issue: Jamaica is quite diverse, with people of African, Anglo, Asian and Indian descent. They could have identified actual Jamaican actors from any of these groups and still had the same (if not a better) effect on the public because it would have been more authentic by design.

I may explore this further via Socially Diverse, but in 2013, culture wins!

Be Visually Driven: Make Readers Think AND Feel

b5scripts031(1)Here is what I imagine to be the typical writing process for most people:

  • Idea
  • Outline
  • Draft Copy
  • Inclusion of relevant links (if applicable)
  • Edit for style and grammar
  • Publish

The thing is we have only addressed what we want people to think. If you’re an amazing writer, then yes, your words can also jump off of the page and the screen to generate a thought as well as a feeling for readers. That said, the vast majority of  people need a little help to get feelings going.

There are a variety of stock image sites out there, try out a few. Consider hiring a freelance photographer to get the shot that you want, if this is in a professional context. Lastly, don’t be afraid to get behind the lens yourself and shoot something original!

However you choose to proceed, the bottom line is this:

We live in a visually driven world.  Don’t just edit for grammar and style. Enhance your writing with powerful, relevant images. Give readers something to make them think AND feel.

My Wish for Everyone in 2013

2013As the clock struck 12, I was at a small get-together with friends old and new. It wasn’t the rush of excitement that I’m used to, but it was exactly what I needed – an easy transition into a year that will bring serious growth and change.

In 2013, I wish and hope that everyone can be granted:

  •  Strength and wisdom for the choices that must be made
  •  Peace of mind and peace within your soul
  •  A connection of the heart and spirit – that of yours and another
  •  Success in the form that is most fulfilling got you.

If you don’t do anything else in 2013, please do this:

Pay attention to what stirs your soul. Bathe in it.

What’s Your Story?

What’s Your Story? It’s a question I often ask when I meet people and really have a chance to get to talk.

I believe that if you know what makes people tick, you can determine what makes them click. Though I stand by this view and find it very helpful in the context of work, underneath it all, I have a genuine interest not just knowing people but also understanding them.

Once we meet and I find out a few details about you, I can say that I know you, but it is only through hearing your story, your journey, that I that I can really understand and connect beyond a surface level.

That deeper connection is the foundation upon which great relationships develop (friend to friend, supervisor to colleague, consumer to business leader, etc.).

Whether it is in relation to work or a broader slice of life, focus on more than the now. Get to know AND understand those around you. Lastly, don’t be shy the next time someone asks: “What’s Your Story?”
