A nice piece by Gini Dietrich found its way into my inbox today via PR Daily. The article titled “14 things that must be in your social media policy” speaks for itself. Nearly all of the key points are there. Being transparent, meaningful, respectful, sensitive to confidential information, etc.
There’s one key point that is missing though – the part about empowering employees.
Effective social media policies address important legal issues, but they focus on empowering employees and explaining how social media activity can be used to further fulfill an organization’s mission and/or support business goals.
Instead of thinking about what employees CANNOT do, focus on what they CAN do! Teach them how they can be brand/org advocates and then give them space to operate on your behalf.
