Music and PR: Amy Winehouse

Talent is an interesting word. Merriam-Webster defines it in several ways:

1. a: any of several ancient units of weight

b: a unit of value equal to the value of a talent of gold or silver

2 a characteristic feature, aptitude, or disposition of a person or animal

3 the natural endowments of a person

4 a: a special often athletic, creative, or artistic aptitude

b: general intelligence or mental power :ability

Going with these definitions, it makes some sense when I hear HR professionals refer to employees and potential hires as talent. Ideally, you want someone with great ability, “intelligence or mental power,” but I have always reserved the word for individuals with real gifts in the athletic or artistic sense.

We recently lost a great talent in Amy Winehouse. There isn’t much to say, but there’s lots sing, and in my case, hum.
